Statement of Affirmation

Cosmopolitan United Church is a refuge for all to worship and serve God. We are all one in Christ Jesus and in Christ there is no difference between us (Galatians 3:28). People of every race, color, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, physical or mental ability, age, family structure, level of education, immigration, and socioeconomic status are free to live out their faith and belong in God’s family as God has created them.

In spiritual meekness we obey Jesus’ commands to love God and love our neighbor (Matthew 22:37-38).

Therefore, our church is committed to ensuring that those who worship with us, including those part of the LGBTQIA+ community, can attend worship, obtain membership, and fully participate in and receive all the rites and sacraments of being a part of the body of Christ. Additionally, as an open and affirming congregation the church supports LGBTQIA+ ministry/ordination candidates, and sanctions LGBTQIA+ marriages.

We share the mission of the UMC Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) advocating, educating, and ministering for the full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ persons and other marginalized communities within the Church and beyond inviting God’s desire to reconcile with all through Christ (Colossians 1:20).

We commit ourselves to walk in the spirit of God’s love and inclusiveness so that all people may experience the eternal and unconditional love of Jesus Christ, our savior, and Lord.
